Evaluation and improvement of suspension seat vibration isolation performance

Objective

VIBSEAT seeks to improve the working conditions of the operators of on-road and off-road vehicles, rail vehicles and small marine craft by providing methods of assessing suspension seat performance in the horizontal and rotational axes, and providing industry with the technology to design marketable seats capable of isolating vibration in these axes. The project will involve field trials to obtain representative measurements of the vehicle vibrations and laboratory studies to assess human factors including the impedance of the body and the discomfort caused by the vibrations. The assessment method will be disseminated to standardisation committees through members involved in the project. Theoretical and physical (prototype) models of practical seat suspension systems will be produced with the direct involvement of three major European seat manufacturers to ensure transfer of technology to industry.
