Development of a new method for the detection of damage caused by osmosis in laminated fibre-glass yachts and boats by means of a suitable heat source and infrared light technology

Objective

In laminated fibreglass boats seawater can penetrate through the different laminate layers of the fibre-gass hull to material failures such as cracks, scratches etc. and destroys the hull's water resistance. The weight of the boat increases and in those areas affected by osmosis the walls swell. To date this damage has been identified by means of visual inspection when obvious swelling has appeared on the hull. The result is that it is often too late to apply a repair method that is economically viable. Due to increasing environmental standards and safety considerations the early detection of damages on GFK boats becomes more and more important. The objective is to develop a new measurement system based on infrared light (heat image) cameras that fulfils the following criteria: Early detection of possible weak spots affected by osmosis. High measuring precision. High operational reliability. Portable and easy to install; low maintenance costs. Low production cost for the system. Reduction of repair costs and negative environmental impact by early detection of damaged areas

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
