Enzymes as antifouling agents in marine painting for ships and other offshore constructions.

Objective

The use of biocides in antifouling paints has been shown to be a significant environmental problem worldwide. Several countries have already introduced restrictions on the use of some of the most harmful biocides and more strict regulations on the use of biocides are under completion at the EU-level. This project sets out to develop a bio safe method of antifouling harmless to nature but still effective against fouling at ships and offshore constructions by using enzymes instead of biocides in marine paintings. The SME coordinator is in the process of developing a technology to replace biocides with enzymes in antifouling paints for yachts and boats. In order to develop the technology to the use on larger ships and offshore constructions, research is required to develop enzyme antifouling materials with a much longer lasting stability and effect, than is the case today. This will require a research effort in manipulating the enzymes and develop the binding technology in the painting.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
