Objective
The major output from the project will be an increased understanding of how to reduce the probability of burst from manufacturing anomalies of high integrity critical rotating parts This knowledge will be exploited by all the engine manufacturers in this project and will be used to increase safety not only in Europe, but world-wide. The project will achieve this by deliberately creating manufacturing anomalies in test blocks of two disc materials, which will be process monitored during machining trials and non-destructively inspected before fatigue testing. This data will be integrated using a probabilistic method to enable a statistical relation between anomaly size and detection capability. This will allow a software method to be written which evaluates the probability of burst in service in terms of the feature, the manufacturing method and the controls specified From this, the optimum combination of process controls and selection of manufacturing method can be constructed which will deliver the ten times reduction in the rate of disc burst events.
