Objective
Improvement of tools for the machining of aeronautic aluminum and titanium alloys. These light alloys present several problems when machining: trend to stick and ductility of those materials, overheating, abrasive wear of Ti, etc. Therefore, tools with durable very sharp edges and without surface defects are needed. The application of selected treatments such as ion implantation, multi layered PVD or multi process coatings, together with a redesign of the tools taking into consideration the surface treatments and coatings to be applied, can significantly improve the performance of the tools. The objective of the project is an extension of tool life, improvement of the finishing quality of machined parts, process speed up or coolant reduction, and above all, a reduction in the processing costs of the aeronautical parts machined from Al and Ti alloys.
