Dual material titanium alloy friction welded blisk

Objective

The proposed programme will help to secure the strong position of Europe's aerospace industry in the world market by developing and validating a new technology with regard to design and manufacture of BLISKs (bladed disks) for aero engine compressor applications. This highly innovative BLISK technology allows an optimum material choice for the blades and the disk, leading to a significant increase in cycle performance and reliability and at the same time to a notable weight reduction. The project involves the manufacture and repair of dual high strength titanium alloy/ dual microstructure joints by linear friction welding, the assessment and adaptation of non-destructive test methods to assure the integrity and reliability of the parts at all phases of their lives, the modelling of individual process steps, and the production and validation of a demonstrator BLISK to prove the applicability of the concept to real components.
