Active aeroelastic aircraft structure (3AS)

Objective

The proposed project will develop and evaluate design concepts to improve aircraft efficiency through exploitation of airframe aero elastic deformations. These concepts will ensure optimum efficiency at all flight and payload conditions through continual adjustment of the aircraft shape. Exploitation of the aero elastic behavior will enable the use of aerodynamic loads to produce the required deformations. Considerable reductions in structural weight, size of stabilizer surfaces, aerodynamic drag, and design loads will be possible. After initial evaluation of possible design approaches, selected concepts will be applied to several aircraft configurations. An important part of the project will concentrate on the performance and feasibility of new smart materials and the development of new actuation systems. The most promising concepts will be validated by wind tunnel tests. A database will be created to describe the aero elastic impacts and results from the programme.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
