Objective
This project aims at improving the "affordability" of aircraft by reducing recurring cost and non-recurring lead-time of components assembly. The BASSA "lean-manufacturing" concept will reduce the number of process steps. A room temperature curing adhesive with corrosion protection properties will be applied in a one-step assembly process. Parts are fixed by bonding and then drilled and joint with fasteners without disassembly and de-burring. This enables reduction and simplification of tooling. The strength of the bonded joint may lead to additional savings by reducing the number of fasteners. The process will be developed for application in three large families of structures: metal airfoils (e.g. control surfaces) , metal fuselage panels (shells) , and composite structures. Qualification will be performed on small-scale test specimen.
