Objective
The steel industry needs continually to develop new products and improve existing grades, improve process efficiency, reduce energy consumption and increase its levels of recycling. All such developments are very expensive and time-consuming by the traditional sequence of laboratory, pilot and works trials, and current models are not physical enough to extend much beyond established results. Here, a highly physical research tool is to be developed to address this shortfall and to be applied to 4 initial target problems. The chosen Phase Field method is able to calculate kinetic and morphological evolution in solidification, grain growth and solid state phase transformation, and should be suitable for recrystallisation and texture. This metallurgical modeling capability will be markedly extended and validated and then applied to a range of specified industrial problems through 'virtual experiments'.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
