Melt-made polymer nanocomposites " melt-nanocomp"

Objective

Nanocomposites exhibit unique combinations of properties e.g. improved mechanical and surface properties, lower densities as compared with conventional reinforced plastics, and halogen-free flame retardancy. However, nanocomposites manufacture requires the use of expensive nanofillers.

This RTD project aims at decreasing the costs:
i) by avoiding expensive wet-chemistry steps and;
ii) by reducing the number of processing steps. A first main innovation is the combination of high-shear compounding and reactive processing techniques to produce concentrates. A second originality is the combination of high-shear and in-line processing technologies, enabling shaping of pieces in one compounding/processing step. Technology demonstrators for the automotive, electrical and mechanical moulded goods will be produced.
