Objective
Aim of the project is to improve magnesium manufacturing technology for structural components by development of a direct hot hydrostatic extrusion process and tailoring alloys and billet preparation in order to improve extrudability and meet functional requirements for lightweight automotive, aerospace, railway rolling stock and bicycle applications. Research concerns hydrostatic extrusion processing, alloy development and casting, magnesium processing technologies and the development and testing of demonstrator components. A five to ten-fold productivity increase is expected for magnesium extrusions, which corresponds with a 50 % lowering of the manufacturing costs. The targeted weight reductions for components such as side impact bars, window cross members and bicycle fore forks are 30% and 80% compared to aluroinium and steel counterparts, enabling a breakthrough for magnesium extrusions for transport applications.
