Drug loading of implant surfaces with local controlled release system

Objective

This proposal deals with the development of a technology for drug loading and a controlled release system on the surface of a metal implant. Five promising coating technologies will be examined in order to develop this loading and releasing technology. The research will be done on a generic surface and finally result in the development of a prototype implant. In Drugloresys a complex implant surface was chosen for this purpose, namely a stent to be placed in the vessel of a patient whose vessels are narrowed due to plaque. Vascular diseases are in 40% the cause of death in the EU, as the narrowing of vessels (restenosis) lead to heart attacks as well as strokes. A promising method to reduce the amount of restenosis would be a drug-coated stent, releasing drugs locally. The impact of a solution for local drug delivery in vascular diseases is high, but also the future application areas are most promising, such as oncology and diabetes as well as orthopedic surgery.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
