The production of ground glass (or frosted or etched glass) is linked to heavy environmental impacts and poor working conditions. The etching based process using fluoric acid (HF) leads to polluting effluent wastes and to severe health-threat towards workers. Environment regulations and health and safety rules are not often fully respected by manufacturers. It is found to be too costly to applied especially because of the competitiveness with low-wages labor costs countries that have much less regulations.
The objective of the project is to replace the etching process with a cost effective green process. The research goal is to create the surface defaults that produced the ground effect by depositing a coating layer (ceramic type in aqueous formulation) on the glass capable of resisting up to 600°C.
