Substitution of o-phthalate plasticizers used in rotomoulding

Objective

Di-alkyl-phthalates are the compounds mainly used as plasticizers in the manufacture of vinyl plastisols These plasticizers have subject of recent controversy due to their potential toxicity. Some limitations to their use in toys for babies are likely to be implemented in a short term for the migration of such components. This new situation will require the substitution of these materials in toys manufacturing. The use of di-alkyl-phthalates has not represented any obstacle up to now , since they were used to fulfill the safety requirements of toys. The substitution of phthalates to other compounds to be used as plasticizers will require of the potential candidates the following considerations: During the process:
- A high compatibility with the resin- The material must present an appropriate rheology
- The material must have an appropriate behavior at high temperatures to avoid degradation. The materials must present a good behavior to the mould release. On the finished product:
- The study of volatility and migration of plasticizer in the final product with the double effect of a possible damage to the child and/or the piece.
- The effect of living agents (mildew, bacteries, etc...) on the plasticizer.
