Objective
In GeneraI Galvanising, the industrial problem to overcame is relevant to the so-called Silicon reactive .steels for which the hot-dip galvanized coating is too-thick, fragile and dark-grey Based on some promising preliminary results, the goal of this project is the set-up of a modified flux solution for general galvanising allowing :
- to reduce the interface reactivity of Silicon reactive steels in a molten zinc bath (Sandelin type with Si=0.05-0.15 and iper-Sandelin Si>0.15%) in order to achieve for these steels the same quality of non-reactive steels;
- to eliminate localised outburst in the coating due to local surface accumulation of Si .Besides the already experimented Ni salts, flux solution will be modified using salts funned with ions of metals such as Mn, Sn, Al, V, etc. and/or their combination as they have shown interface reaction reduction capability, for the so-called iper-Sandelin steels.
Research work shall be divided in tasks:
Starting reference flux solution based on Ni salts;
Addition of elements salts, other than Ni, effective in reducing steels reactivity;
Optimisation of the most promising solutions applied to several steel grades;
Industrial implementation of lab results.
