A new process for the application of hard coatings to extursion die in the plastic industry.

Objective

The project will develop a laser cladding technique for the application of hard tungsten carbide coatings to extrusion die for the plastics industry. Currently, tiles or nibs of sintered tungsten carbide are applied with brazing. Particles of the carbide can dislodge, causing damage to the die. Renewal of the coating is also time consuming and costly in terms of downtime. The most significant advantages will be virtually perfect adherence of the Coating to the under layer, and the ability to simply re-apply a new coating over the top once the old coating has worn. The particular challenge in developing the technique arises from the geometry of extrusion dies, as they have a large number of small holes whose I/D ' s must be sufficiently coated without any compromise over process time and cost. SME proposer CTD is a wear materials specialist active in the design and manufacture of extrusion die for the plastics industry. It's partner BMF is an SME engineering company.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
