Cladding of hastelloy for industrial engineering flanges (CHIEF)

Objective

The laser cladding of stainless steel with Hastelloy in order that critical exposed areas achieve the same corrosion performance as solid Hastelloy would dramatically reduce the consumption of the alloy in the production of flanges for chemical vessels and pipe work systems with important consequences for the usage level of the strategic elements required. At the sometime a cost reduction of up to 200% per flange would be produced by minimization of Hastelloy usage and this would lead to increased competitiveness for the manufacture of such components. Research is proposed into the process optimization of laser cladding of Hastelloy in powder form on to stainless steel flanges and weld necks. The main deliverable to be produced from this project is attested demonstration system for laser cladding in this system. This technology can be exploited for the production of flanges with a wide range of sizes for use in manufacture of chemical processing plant.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
