Objective
The objective of this proposal will be to eliminate the requirement for oil lubrication in drilling applications. A typical drill requires 1 litre of lubricating oil / hour, this is a significant cause of pollution as the drilling operation includes the use of compressed air which blows the oil as a mist over the drilling site. In addition to ground contamination, there can also be fouling of ground water or staining of stone such as marble. The aim is to replace oil with solid lubricant coatings deposited by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) techniques. It is planned to evaluate the performance of a recently developed low friction and hard wearing carbon - chromium coating known as Graphit-iC. The advantage of the coating is that in laboratory tests it has been shown to exhibit lower friction in water than in engine oil. The project will evaluate if the solid lubricant coatings can survive the highly abrasive environment experience in drilling applications.
