Objective
Plasma Carburizing of steel is an essential industrial process for surface hardening and increasing the wear resistance. This process is consequently increasing the lifetime of steel material and tools. However, this process is hardly controllable due to a lack of in-process monitoring techniques. The technical project goal is to set up a non-destructive in-site measurement technique to measure the carbon concentration profile perpendicular to the surface and to characterize the microstructure of the steel surface on line during the plasma carburizing process. To achieve these goals the optical measurement technique spectro scopicellipsometry will be set up in a plasma reactor. The expected results: measurement of the carbon concentration profile in-process, correction of deviations of the carbon concentration profile and distribution immediately during the plasma process without stopping the process, avoiding bad parts, improvement of the quality standard of the surfaces.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
