Certified reference materials for optical telecommunication wavelengths (CREW)

Objective

To cope with the increasing demand for bandwidth, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems are increasingly used for optical telecommunication. Currently the wavelength range for DWDM lS expanding and the channel spacing are becoming narrower. To supervise networks and calibrate measurement equipment, wavelength reference materials with relative accuracies ranging from 10-6 to 10-8 will be needed in a range from 1480 nm to 1640 nm. The objectives of this project are to develop, characterize and certify wavelength standards with different accuracy classes suited for present and future DWDM systems. The materials will be tested in operating fiber networks. The possibility of disseminating reference wavelengths over transparent wide area networks will be examined for cost-effective on-site calibrations.
