Ceramic and carbon fibres: validation of testing methods (VAFTEM)

Objective

The proposal covers research in support to standards for characterization methods for ceramic and carbon fibres used to reinforce ceramic matrix and carbon-carbon composites. The technical content directly addresses current and future needs of CEN TC 184 SC1 and meets the requirements of GROWTH dedicated call topic III.15 in terms of scope and time schedule. The main expected results are new, validated high temperature test procedures for small-diameter fibres and interfacial properties, and draft standard documents to be fed directly into SC1's work programme. The composition of the consortium that brings together leading organizations with ample experience in PNR, CNR, metrology and standards drafting, guarantees project success and a swift and thorough exploitation of its results. The project will strengthen EU competitiveness in the high-employment, capital-intensive industrial sector of high temperature technologies by providing Europe with a set of independent and reliable test standards.
