Development of a European Integrated Database of immunological interest

Objective

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DATABASE OF IMMUNOLOGICAL INTEREST THAT COMBINES NUCLEOTIDE AND PROTEIN SEQUENCES OF IMMUNOGLOBULINS, T-CELL RECEPTORS AND HLA PROTEINS AND THEIR GENES, DETAILED EXPERT ANNOTATION OF THESE SEQUENCES, MAPPING DATA AND THE RESULTS OF COMPARATIVE SEQUENCE ANALYSIS, I.E. SEQUENCE ALIGNMENTS. THIS DATABASE WILL PROVIDE IMMUNOLOGISTS WITH AN INTEGRATED TOOL THAT ALLOWS THEM TO MANAGE AND ANALYSE THE COMPLEX INFORMATION THEY ARE INTERESTED IN.
GENES AND PROTEINS 0F IMMUNOLOGICAL INTEREST ARE NOT APPROPRIATELY COVERED BY THE EXISTING MOLECULAR BIOLOGICAL DATABASES. GENERAL DATABASES SUCH AS EMBL, SWISS-PROT OR GDB CANNOT STORE ALL INFORMATION IMPORTANT TO IMMUNOLOGISTS. MOREOVER, DATA FROM SEQUENCES, MAPPING AND OTHER DATABASES ARE NOT INTERCONNECTED. HERE WE PROPOSE TO ESTABLISH A NEW EUROPEAN DATABASE THAT OVERCOMES MOST OF THESE SHORT-COMINGS BY USING STATE-OF-THE-ART DATABASE TEBHNOLOGY COMBINED WITH EXPERT KNOWLEDGE TO INTEGRATE SEQUENCE INFORMATION, ANNOTATION, SEQUENCE ALIGNMENTS AND MAPPING DATA. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF MANY DISEASES SUCH AS AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES OR LEUKEMIA DEPEND HEAVILY ON THE KIND OF INFORMATION PROVIDED BY A DATABASE AS PROPOSED HERE. SUCH AN INTEGRATED DATABASE OF IMMUNOLOGICAL MOLECULAR DATA WOULD BE OF IMMENSE VALUE FOR BIOMEDICINE AS WELL AS THE EUROPEAN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY AND WOULD CONSIDERABLY HELP TO STRENGTHEN EUROPES ROLE IN THESE AREAS.
THE MAPPING OF GENES AND THE ELUCIDATION OF GENE SEQUENCES IS IMPORTANT FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE HUMAN AND OTHER GENOMES. HOWEVER, FOR AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE ACCUMULATING DATA, SPECIAL DATABASES ARE NECESSARY THAT SORT,ARRANGE AND MOST IMPORTANTLY INTERPRET THE COLLECTED INFORMATION. THE INTERPREATTION OF THE DATA RELATED TO IMMUNOLOGICALLY IMPORTANT GENES AND PROTEINS IS PERHAPS ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX PROBLEMS, AND CONSIDERABLE EXPERT KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED. THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS THEREFORE AN IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION IN THE AREA OF "HUMAN GENOME RESEARCH".
