Categorical methods in algebraic topology

Objective

The proposal is that 20 young mathematicians be financed to attend two meetings in June 2001 on the Calculus of Functors, in association with the Network HPRN-CT-1999-00119. The first is a lecture series by Goodwillie of Brown Un. USA, by invitation of the London M.S. The second is an International Conference on categorical Decomposition Techniques in Topology. Activity is at a high pitch, both in basic developments and in the applications. These provide a rare opportunity for Europeans to become educated in the area by its originator and to hear of the latest advances by the international leaders. But the estimated cost of attending both meetings, including travel, is 1708 ECU and the Network lacks the finance to support its young members on this scale.
