Associations, Wealth Creation, and Governance in the EU: The Governability of EU Business Associations

Objective

Associations are central to some systems of economic management, but despite its greater reliance on outside input to policy making when compared to member states, not yet to the EU. EU wide business associations offer the prospect to support public policy making, and to implement policy initiatives aimed at stimulating wealth creation through the encouragement of global sectoral competitiveness, but certain characteristics of associations, their environment, and member incentives may account for differences in their governability and hence their ability to contribute to EU wealth creation.

The purpose of this two part conference series is therefore to:
1. exchange expertise and transfer knowledge between researchers and policy practitioners (see 'training' below);
2. encourage the development of unconventional thinking and new approaches to understanding the limits and potential of business associations in the specific EU environment to contribute to public policy goals;
3. encourage the development of unconventional thinking and new approaches to understanding the support needed from Eu institutions in order to develop the role of collective business actors in European governance;
4. develop lasting support networks between the actors identified in 1. above.

The first meeting will focus on perspectives, analysis and information on business associations and their operating environment, while the second meeting will focus on the support needed from EU institutions in order to develop the role of collective business actors in European governance. Whilst previous conferences have been aimed at general discussions of 'lobbying', none have specially addressed the crucial role and capacities of EU associations - the 'natural constituency' of the Commission.
