Objective
The 8th International Conference on the History of Language Sciences (ICHoLS) will take place at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Fontenay-Saint-Cloud, from Tuesday Sept.14 to Sunday Sept.19 1999, under the patronage of the Société d'Histoire et d'Epistémologie des Sciences du Langage (Society of History and Epistemology of Linguistics) et du Laboratoire d'Histoire des Théories Linguistiques (Laboratory of History of Linguistics) UMR CNRS 7597 Paris 7/Fontenay-Saint-Cloud.
This series of international conferences which was held for the first time in Ottawa in 1978, takes place alternatively in Europe (Lille, Trêves, Galway, Oxford) and in America. The conference will be a meeting point for researchers working in the field of the History of Linguistics, a domain currently expanding, numerous learned societies and several scientific journals.
In view of the multiplication of national and international meetings, ICHoLS, which gathers periodically about two hundred participants, aim at unifying the international community and at spreading the results of works which are more and more complex.
The fact that this conferences takes place in France (for the second time after Lille 1981) signs the crucial and internationaly role played by the Laboratoire d'Histoire des Théories Linguistiques: its researchers are members of the scientific committees of ICHoLS since its creation, of several specialized societies and of scientific committees journals of the domain. It is very important that the conference takes place in the best conditions and the financial help of the European Community is capital.
