Neon observing school

Objective

The Network of European Observatories in the North (NEON) proposes to focus its light on and favour the development of modern style astronomical observation by organising a yearly observational summer school in active observatories with state of the art optical/IR instrumentation. The School proposes tutorial observations in small groups of 3 students, centred around a small research project, under guidance of a tutor dedicated to each group, and going through all steps of a standard observing run: preparations, observations, calibrations and data reductions. Results have to be presented the last day. A few lecturers that are experts in their field also give necessary fundaments of optics, photometry, spectroscopy, etc.

This school is set-up by an initial consortium of three European observatories (Asiago-Italy, Calar Alto-Germany/Spain and Haute Provence-France), with prospects to be enlarged in the future (discussions in the Opticon network). It brings in addition the opportunity to foster collaborative research projects among the participants and to develop among the various contributing astronomers the practical knowledge of available instrumental packages, a necessary step for future co-ordination among observatories. It is open to young researchers from all member states and associated states of European Community.

The ultimate goal is to give to the participants the instrumental and observational knowledge necessary for successful applications at the various European observatories and beyond. This is particularly important in the era of space observatories and large 8m telescopes that have to be used with utmost efficiency.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
