Objective
While the objective of modern toxicology is still protection of life against external harmful factors, the focus of research in this field has gradually evolved toward a mechanic oriented science. Also it has become apparent during recent years that food contaminants are a relevant health risk for the consumer. Another novel aspect is the reviewed interest that industry has in the identification of new targets based on mechanistic studies to assess reliably adverse of drugs and to develop new therapeutic principles. The proposed conference is focused on the most recent development in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms leading directly to cell dysfunction or causing stress responses and consequent organ failure. The identification of new sensitive molecular targets will help to bridge the gap between in vitro studies and the in vivo implications of toxic and pathological processes and eventually unveil the relationship between exposure to toxic agents and food contaminant with slowly developing degenerative diseases. The interactions between the central nervous system and the immune system will be addressed in several lectures. The conference plan is articulated in six separate sessions dealing with models of neurodegeneration and organ failure, and with the molecular determinants in the execution of apoptosis, which may be particularly relevant to slow neurodegenerative conditions and immunologically-mediated disorders.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
