International Conference on Nuclei in the Cosmos, Aarhus 2000

Objective

Nuclei in the Cosmos are a biennial conference series in the multidisciplinary field of nuclear astrophysics. The last meeting was held in Volos, Greece, in 1998, with support from an EU contract. The conferences serve as the main forum for exchange of the latest results in laboratory nuclear astrophysics, new developments in the modelling of stellar nucleosynthesis, recent observations of stellar abundance distributions, gamma-ray sources and new results and interpretation of meteoritic anomalies. A major strength of the conferences is the bringing together of these very diverse, but closely related, fields of research. Indeed, much of the work in this interdisciplinary area of astro- physics, nuclear physics, geochemistry and astronomy can be directly traced to discussions and papers at these meetings.
The current meeting is particularly timely. Several new experimental facilities for laboratory nuclear astrophysics are starting up, as is the Canadian Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, which is set to revolutionize the observation of solar neutrinos. Also, the observation of gamma ray sources in the sky and their identification with individual astrophysical objects will enter a new era, as the European satellite INTEGRAL will be launched in the nearest future. Finally, extensive observations of distant supernovae are providing strong evidence that a major revision of current cosmological thinking is required. We expect the NIC2000 conference to represent a major milestone within these exciting areas of research.
It is the tradition of the conference to include an exceptionally large percentage of young scientists and women. The invited speakers belong to the absolute leading researchers in their fields; in addition, several other prominent scientists have confirmed their participation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
