SYMPOSIUM GALILEO 2001: Revolución Científica y Cultura Europa. Perspectivas en Historia y Filosofía de la Ciencia

Objective

The Symposium will present an interdisciplinary view of Galileo approaching the following subjects: a) Scientific themes: Mechanics, Laws of Motion, Cosmology; b) Theological and philosophical themes: The Galileo Affair, Galileo and Theology, Historical Revisions of the Galileo Case; c) Historical and Cultural themes: Galileo and European culture, The diffusion of Galileo's work, Galileo and European Scientific Institutions.

Scientific Objectives can be summarised as follows: 1) To offer an opportunity for the leading international experts and young researchers to discuss their most recent studies on the themes detailed above; 2) To discuss and evaluate the advances in studies of these themes since the last international conference devoted to Galileo "Novità celeste e crisi dei sapere", held in Italy in 1983; 3) To present the project "The Digital Galileo" as an example of the utility of the latest technology in research on Galilean manuscripts; 4) To give those attending the possibility of publicising, via the Symposium, new heuristic and didactic material, both printed and audio-visual, related to Galileo, and to present the latest translations and critical editions of Galileo's books; 5) To offer young researchers, including some who cannot attend the conference, the opportunity to present their work using the medium of posters; 6) To open lines of communication between young researchers and the experts in the diverse universities and research institutions working in the same fields; 7) To give international cover to the current state of Galilean studies via publication of the Symposium Proceedings. The Orotava Foundation is organising this so that the publication will be in the original languages of the contributors, and will be available during the second half of the year 2001.
