Microdomains, Lipid Rafts and Caveolae

Objective

Microdomains, lipid rafts and caveolae serve to organise cellular membranes. They are involved in essential cellular functions such as signaling, lipid and protein sorting and trafficking. A number of molecules that are causally connected to diseases are found in lipid rafts and may be converted to aberrant forms within raft domains, e.g. amyloid precursor protein in Alzheimer's disease, prion protein in scrapie.
The existence of lipid rafts has only recently been demonstrated in vivo by the use of advanced biophysical imaging techniques. This area is highly multidisciplinary and involves laboratories with cell biological, biochemical and biophysical expertise. The objective of the proposed EURESCO conference serles "Microdomains, Lipid Rafts and Caveolae" is to bring together established scientists and young investigators to catalyse information exchange, training and future developments in this forthcoming, important research field.
We propose two meetings: Meeting 1 "Lipid Rafts and Caveolae" (2001, Spain) and meeting2 "Microdomains" (2003, Portugal). The first meeting will host about 25 invited speakers with approximately l00 participants in total. The scientific sessions will feature the topics of raft signaling and trafficking, raft lipids, T cells, caveolae endocytosis, integrins and the cytoskeleton and raft imaging.
The second event in this series will be similar in nature but puts more emphasis on the lipid and disease aspect of lipid rafts and caveolae.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
