Objective
The recent introduction of the idea of 'social capital ' in the social sciences has had a decisive impact both in the methodology of social research and in important areas of substantive research on the political and economic conditions of modern society, Europe in particular. Its very conceptualisation has stimulated important research projects and has shown the way in which to link different issues and different disciplines. Because of its fortune, however, the idea has perhaps been over-stretched both as a way of explaining complex social macro-processes and as an all-comprehensive concept. There is a growing feeling in the scientific community that some methodological and conceptual rigour is needed to maintain the explanatory potential of 'social capital' research. This implies both looking again at the micro-foundations of the theory of social capital and establishing ways of comparing research done within and across disciplines.
The conference is meant to provide a context for these two operations. Its main objectives are: a) encourage conceptual clarification; b) set up exchange between different approaches and disciplinary perspectives; c) verify the extent of the impact of social capital research on important themes in the social sciences.
