Objective
Scientific objectives:
To promote international exchange of ideas and data on genetic diseases of copper metabolism. Wilson's disease is rare but one of the few medically treatable diseases of the liver. Early diagnosis and initiation of therapy may prevent morbidity and decrease the need for liver transplantation. Progress in the understanding of such rare diseases requires a worldwide cooperation of scientists of a variety of medical subspecialties. The format of this meeting is unique to achieve this objective. Ultimately, reliable diagnosis of Wilson's disease requires improved technologies (chip technology for genetic screening, establishment of methods to directly measure ATP7A (Menkes' disease gene) and ATP7B (Wilson's disease gene) expression and function) and will result in new therapies including gene repair. EU scientists should be able to be frontrunners in these developments.
Contents of the EURO-Conference
The conference provides comprehensive overview and detailed lectures on the most advanced topics these disorders of copper metabolism (compare Program Agenda Table and Section C of this proposal in). The following thematic sessions will be covered with lectures of distinguished experts as well as short presentations of the most recent results of the attending researchers (presentations selected by the Scientific Committee): Eukaryontic genes involved in copper homeostasis, Intracellular copper trafficking and metallo-chaperonnes, Copper toxicity and metabolic interactions with iron and zinc, Genetics and epidemiology of Wilson's disease, Treatment of Wilson's disease, Copper in neurodegenerative diseases, and Menkes' disease and other inherited disorders of copper metabolism.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
