Web-portal for Genetic Learning and Training

Objective

Information is less and less accessible because of the high prices of paper editing which is also left behind by the rapidly changing knowledge in science. At present we are on the edge of an important mutation towards e-journalism as a tool for rapid, cheap and interactive access to information; e-journalism has also the advantage of transferring the copyrights from the publishing houses to the author himself. A similar and even more important mutation towards e-learning and e-training is occurring in all fields of science. Genetics has gained in the last 20 years a central role in modern medicine and is affected by these mutations more than other disciplines as documented by the widespread use of the pioneer database in Medical Genetics called OMIM (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man). Between e-journalism and e-reference books (like OMIM) there is a gap, which could be filled by the existence of e-textbooks, which could combine the advantages of peer reviewing (e- journalism) and that of gathering information in a structured text (reference hypertext).

The ultimate goal of the present project will be to provide any user with the possibility to follow a learning path that will suit him/her the best in order to achieve the needed information in the following disciplines: 1. Cancer Genetics; 2.Genetic Counselling. The final form will be a hypertext in the management of which the readers will play an active part.
In the venue of the European School of Genetic Medicine (La Nunziata Centre, Sestri Levante) starting in Autumn 2000 the European Genetics Foundation will share space with the main Italian service provider in the field of multimedia design and development, Giunti Interactive Labs (GIUNTI Ilabs, www.giuntilabs.it) a company of the GIUNTI Publishing Group with headquarters in Florence. The proximity between the offices of GIUNTI Ilabs and the European Genetics Foundation will allow a successful implementation of the GELT Web- portal in terms of not only technically advanced IT solutions (see attached GIUNTI Ilabs' presentation), but above all in terms of excellence of the product to be delivered at the European level.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
