Objective
The scientific objective of the meeting is to allow neuroscientists from different disciplines in European top research to present their recent results and speculate on the mechanisms of memory and memory disorders. In addition, there will be invited speakers, leading specialists from each topic coming from all over the world. The concept is to spend one arctic weekend with other neuroscientists from different disciliplines who will focus only on basic mechanisms of memory and memory disorders to germinate new ideas and support the development of collaboration between European research groups. Contribution and participation of both young and female scientists will be emphasized.
The meeting will consist of five different sessions named: 1) Declarative memory, anatomy of networks, behavioral animal and human studies, 2) Amygdalo-hippocampal interplay in physiological processing and epilepsy, 3) Long-term potentiation as a model of learning and memory, 4) Physiological and pathological plasticity and 5) Hippocampal networks in learning and memory.
The duration of each session will be three hours and consist of five presentations. The sessions will be divided so, that half of the presentation is given by a young scientist (post doc or advanced graduate student) and commented on by the leading senior scientist. Adequate time for discussion with will be included after each presentation. Between the morning and afternoon sessions there will be a three-hour break to allow small group tutorials in special interest groups, and for graduate students to present their poster presentations. The way this congress is organised will encourage communication between top senior scientists and advanced young scientists, providing sufficient time for discussions and planning of future collaborations. The meeting takes place during European Brain Awareness Week of 2001 and is associated with The Second Kuopio Alzheimer Symposium (international) in Kuopio and Neuroscience 2001 Finland in Lapland, which will be held during the same week. Some speakers and participants will participate in more than one of these meetings, which will lower the overall costs.
