Objective
Cross-national research enables social scientists to learn more about the uniqueness and/or commonness of any particular country by comparing it with others.
Cross-sectional data are initially needed at the beginning and are always useful but no longer sufficient: if social and economic change has to be studied, longitudinal panel data are needed.
Using panel data for cross-national and longitudinal research is a relatively new challenge for researchers. The statistical methods for analysing longitudinal data are rarely taught at the university. Therefore there is a real demand for training researchers from different disciplines (demography, economy, sociology, political science) in these types of analysis.
The aim of the present series of Lab Courses is to provide young researchers with the knowledge required for an informed use of panel data and panel methodology on the basis of a comparative cross- national longitudinal micro-database including different European Household Panel Studies (PACO), a Panel Comparability database.
In a computer laboratory each trainee will dispose of his/her own PC, onto which (a) the PACO Database and (b) the necessary statistical software has been loaded. Under the guidance of the lecturers the participants have the possibility to apply and reproduce the methods and models presented to them as well as to practice different techniques of analysis with major statistical software packages: SPSS, SAS and STATA.
