Objective
The aim of the school is to bring an up-to-date formation in the theory and the observational facts concerning accretion and its related phenomena, jet production and high-energy emission in astrophysical objects. We aim also in providing practical training for the use of new generation instruments suited for the study of such phenomena. Accretion process is thought to play a major role in many places in the Universe: the star formation must take place through the collapse of molecular clouds towards a core, the final stage being the formation accretion disk feeding the young star; Active Galactic Nuclei are very probably due to accretion onto a super massive black hole in the centre of galaxies; cataclysmic variables and X -ray binaries are also the result of accretion of a companion star onto a stellar mass compact object, either a white dwarf, a neutron star or a stellar black hole. Gamma-ray bursts are also believed to be produced by the release of enormous amount of energy during a violent accretion process, being probably the final stage leading to a black hole through either the coalescence of two compact objects or the final collapse of a very massive star.
The formation of jets seems to be ubiquitous in all these phenomena, and are associated in some cases with very high energy emission. Despite very different physical conditions, it seems that the basic picture based on magneto-hydrodynamics could account for all these phenomena, but the details are still the subject of intensive research. In 2002 or in the very next years, new instruments with unprecedented sensitivities, energy and angular resolution will be ready to provide new information about all these objects in various wavelength domains: radio (ALMA) and optical (VLTI) interferometers, X-ray (CHANDRA, XMM, INTEGRAL) and gamma-ray (GLAST, AMS) satellites, very high energy ground detectors (HESS, AUGER, ANTARES)... Many of them have been designed by a European collaboration, or an international one with a strong involvement of EU. The school will bring the opportunity of giving the most recent results obtained or expected with these instruments. It will also include practical training for using the most up-to-date techniques and contribute thus to their best use by young researchers.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
