2002 cation pumps

Objective

The l0th International Conference on Na,K-ATPase and Related Cation Pumps"" will be held in Elsinore near Copenhagen, Denmark August 8-14, 2002. The conference will take place at the conference hotel, LO-skolen, and will consist of parallel sessions of lectures, as well as posters and workshops. The expected attendance is 200 active participants.

The purpose of the conference is to present and discuss recent research on gene and protein structure, molecular mechanism, physiological regulation, and involvement in disease processes of Na,K-ATPase and other members of the family of cation pumps. Other prominent members of this family include gastric H,K-ATPase, Ca-ATPase of sarcoplasmic and endoplasmic reticulum, plasma membrane Ca-ATPase, and H-ATPase of fungi and higher plants, as well as heavy metal pumps for maintaining cellular levels of essential metals or extruding toxic heavy metals such for Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Cd+, Co +, and phospholipid pumps.

In spite of their widely different cation specificities, these pumps share a common general protein architecture and consensus amino acid sequences in binding sites for MgATP, phosphorylation, and for transfer of energy to cation sites in the membrane domain. Since 1973, nine previous "Conferences on Na,K-ATPase and Related Cation Pumps" have been arranged every 3-4 years with 180-300 participants in Europe, USA, Argentina, and Japan. The need for these conferences and their relatively large attendance testify to the rapid development of new, results of the intensive research on these ubiquitous and essential cation pumps.

The significance for society at large derives from the fact that several pumps are involved in disease processes and are targets for important drugs such as the cardiac glycosides (Na,K-ATPase) used to treat cardiac failure, or inhibitors of gastric acid secretion (omeprazole) used in treatment of ulcer. New developments in the pathophysiology of diseases such as hypertension, cardiomyopathies, gastric acid related diseases and drug therapies will be discussed extensively.
