2nd International Symposium on Obesity and Hypertension Genetics and Molecular Mechanisms 25. - 27. October 2001, Berlin

Objective

Overweight and obesity currently affect 40-60 % of the adult population in the EU. Obesity is a prime risk factor for the development of hypertension and other cardiovascular abnormalities and, therefore, directly contributes to a large proportion of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. However, the mechanisms underlying the relationship between increased body mass and hypertension remain poorly understood. Recent years have seen a remarkable advance in our understanding of the molecular biology of adipose tissue. Adipocytes are now recognised as an important source of a variety of molecules that have a direct impact on cardiovascular and renal function. Understanding these factors can be expected to lead to new preventive and therapeutic strategies towards managing obesity and its cardiovascular sequelae.
Currently, interaction between the scientific community involved in the fields of cardiovascular medicine and obesity are rudimentary at best. Consequently, the vast majority of cardiovascular researchers know little about the biology or pathophysiological significance of adipose tissue. Furthermore, few European centres are actively involved in obesity research. Academic courses on obesity are virtually non-existent at most academic institutions across the EU.
The aim of ISOH '01 is to bring together a distinguished faculty of leading researchers and opinion leaders from the fields of obesity and cardiovascular research to discuss and exchange ideas and findings relevant to both fields. This high-level meeting should also provide a state-of-the-art overview of recent developments in the two fields, both as training experience and a stimulus for further research in the areas uniting these disciplines.
The need for such a meeting is also reflected by the official endorsement of ISOH '01 by the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) and the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO).

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
