Euroconferences on Immunobiology of Transplantation: from basic science to clinical applications

Objective

The transplantation of cells, tissues & organs is a rapidly evolving field of scientific knowledge & medical practice worldwide. Clinical applications include haemopoietic malignancies, immuno-deficiencies & organ failure. Transplantation also holds strong therapeutic potential for many other chronic degenerative diseases. The extreme genetic diversity of the European populations (donors/recipients), the specificities of Europe's national Public Health systems, & the fact that the legal, ethical & societal issues posed by basic & clinical research/practice in this field vary throughout Europe, all confer unique characteristics to the practice of transplantation biology/medicine in Europe. Transplantation biology/medicine is a complex, integrated field, which requires a multidisciplinary approach to the genetics, & the molecular/cellular immune mechanisms controling graft acceptance & optimal longterm function.

A full understanding of the immunogenetics & histocompatibility governing alloreactivity is a prerequisite for optimal matching of donors & recipients. Haemopoietic & organ transplantation, as well as the fields of cancer, auto-immune & inflammatory diseases, & allergy will benefit from innovative immuno-intervention (tolerance induction, immune deviation & suppression, specific vaccination & immuno-modulation) solidly founded on basic concepts & experimental research. Despite excellent European basic research & transplant centres, to date no European forum for high-level training exists in this field. This proposal concerns the creation of a multidisciplinary forum for basic & clinical scientists working in the academic & industrial settings, at the junior & senior levels. It also intends to promote reflection, at the European level, on the ethical, legal, societal & public health questions, which are specific to transplantation in Europe. This project should catalyze trans-European scientific cooperation & increase the level of European excellence in this field. It should lead to safer selection & optimal matching of donor & recipient, & to the development & validation of new therapeutic perspectives able to impact on cancer immunotherapy & immuno-intervention in autoimmunity & allergy. It has already drawn the pledged support of pharmaceutical & biotechnological partners.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
