DNA and chromosomes: Physical and Biological Approaches

Objective

The objective of this proposal is to organise a high level multidisciplinary Euro Summer School on DNA and chromosomes. It is now clear that a full understanding of the structure and functions of DNA and chromosomes requires a multidisciplinary approach. Computer scientists for instance contribute to the analysis of genomic sequences or help deciphering gene expression using DNA chip technology. Physicists perform single molecule experiments on DNA, chromatin fibres and chromosomes, exploring unknown physical parameters and providing a new understanding of enzymatic catalysis. There is a growing understanding among molecular biologists that biology will in the future benefit from the knowledge accumulated in physics and in physical chemistry. This multidisciplinary approach, which has led to important results in the past, is expected to have a growing impact in the next decade.

Indeed, this field attracts an increasing number of researchers coming from various disciplines. As a result, there are strong training needs. The goal of the present school is precisely to participate in the training of young scientists willing to enter this exciting field. The goal of this high level scientific conference is to provide a comprehensive and state of the art set of lectures on the various approaches used to study DNA and chromosomes. It aims at facilitating the communication between researchers from various disciplines and at fostering the development of new collaborations. Extensive courses (2-4 hours) will be given by 20 invited lecturers chosen among the leading experts in their field. The course will be planned for a mixed audience (physicists, molecular biologists, etc...) at the advanced PhD student/post doctoral level. The long duration of the courses will allow the speakers to be at the same time pedagogical and to provide an uncompromising account of the latest advances. Participants will be given the opportunity to present their work in the form of posters or selected oral presentations. Extensive discussion periods will facilitate communication between members of different disciplines, and between young researchers and leading experts.
