Objective
The field of granular physics is almost unique in its marriage of the most fundamental statistical and nonlinear physics with decades of engineering practice. While the fundamental solid mechanics and flow mechanics of grains seems akin to a variety of engineering problems in elasticity and, rheology, the disordered nature of these systems creates problems that can only be solved by powerful methods of statistical physics. In addition, many of the problems of geophysical interest have traditionally been addressed by geophysicists and sedimentologists. Thus the expertise that contributes to this field ranges from engineering contact mechanics to theories of glassy dynamics, relaxation, and aging. This dialogue between science and engineering must be nurtured to assure continued progress in this rapidly developing field. In addition, there must be dialogue among the different areas of physics (glass theory, nonlinear dynamics, fluid dynamics), which have contributed significantly to this progress over the last ten years.
We have organized a conference made up of seven plenary sessions, covering such diverse areas of granular physics as Dry Flows and Avalanches, Wet Flows, Computational Methods, Kinetic Theory, Granular Statics, Compaction and Vibration, and Glassy Dynamics. Keynote talks will be given by three internationally recognized leaders in theoretical and experimental physics, and we have assured the participation of many eminent senior and mid-career scientists and engineers working in this field, from across the developed and developing worlds. Granular physics is important in a variety of applications in the petroleum and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in the management of natural hazards. At the same time, it represents one of the most ideologically productive and exciting frontiers of physical science and engineering.
