Second International POMI-Conference 2003 "Arctic-Alpine ecosystems and people in a changing environment"

Objective

This Euro Conference will address the broad field of "Environmental Change research in Northern Europe, Arctic and Alpine areas". This involves the contemporary environmental problems under the fields of Climate Change and ecosystem response, Long Range Transport of Pollutants, Ozone/UV -radiation and biological effects in marine and terrestrial environments.
The main goal is to identify the challenges in Arctic-Alpine environmental research along the main transport routes from Europe to the Arctic. The conference invites the marine, terrestrial and atmospheric environmental change research communities of Europe to meet and present recent research results and to exchange information about their research and monitoring activities. The conference is multidisciplinary in scope both in science and space, and shall create new links and understanding across the disciplinary boundaries and among European researchers and research infrastructures.
The conference will in this context also discuss the role of research infrastructures in environmental change research and is used as a meeting place to create new consortia and research proposals for the next EC framework programme (FP6). The conference is the result of several research initiatives that have been merged together into one common European Conference, which will be hosted by the Polar Environmental Centre (POMI) in Tromsoe, northern Norway. The conference will serve as the final scientific meeting of the European Network for Arctic-Alpine Multidisciplinary Environmental Research (ENVINET), funded under the FP5/IHP-programme. The conference will also be the final conference of the Nordic Arctic Research Program (NARP), funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Arctic Council. The Large Scale Facility for Arctic Environmental Research in Ny-Aalesund (Ny-Aaesund LSF) will support the meeting as its final User Meeting under the present FP5/IHP "Access to Research Infrastructures" contract. The Arctic Seas Consortium will organise jointly with the meeting their Arctic Seas Conference.
The scientific and socio-economic challenges of environmental change demand a broad and multidisciplinary approach. By addressing these important questions, the conference shall create a forum for discussion across the disciplines and function as a meeting place for new research collaborations - looking ahead to the next EC framework programme. The conference will also discuss the role of thematic networks and research infrastructures in environmental research, building on the experiences and recommendations given under ENVINET. The Euro Conference project is an adequate forum that will exchange our abilities to address the broader scientific community and the young researchers in Europe under this important field of research.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
