Objective
The 8th European Symposium on Aquatic Microbial Ecology (SAME-8) is a joint Symposium of the previous European Marine Microbiology Symposium (EMMS) and the International Workshop on the measurement of Microbial Activities in the Carbon Cycle in Aquatic Environments. The scientific program includes classical ecological topics (food-chains, biogeochemical cycles, structure and role of the microbial communities in the aquatic systems), topics that reflect the development of molecular techniques (mechanisms of adaptations to environmental changes, quorum sensing), and a session dedicated to the possible applications of the aquatic microorganisms (use of microorganisms for bioremediation, search for bioactive products). All the sessions will be coordinated by world-wide known scientists leading in the related research topics. The keynote speakers will be also responsible of a preliminary one week long electronic conference that will allow an in-depth analysis of the SAME-8 major topics.
The SAME-8 will contribute to the better understanding of the aquatic ecosystem functioning and the possible exploitation of its natural microbial resources by allowing confrontation of experienced individual groups for all over the word. SAME-8 will serve as a forum for scientists, engineers, biotechnologists, industrialists and others to exchange ideas, knowledge and experience and to establish synergistic links and collaboration. It will be an occasion for a proper standardisation of protocols and focusing on still unsolved problems such as the microbial diversity, the microbial interactions at the molecular level or the potential industrial interest of aquatic microorganisms. New information concerning the biological investigation of still unexplored marine environments will be spread during the round table of the EC Project BIODEEP (No.EVK3-2000-22057). A demonstration area of several biotechnological companies will facilitate the updating of available technologies for experimental works.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
