Objective
Several Marie Curie Post grade Training Fellowships are available in the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Science at Newcastle University in the area of Plant-Environment Interactions - a field in which we have internationally recognized expertise.
Training is available within three areas: environmental and molecular plant physiology (Dr. Jeremy Barnes & Dr Anne Borland); soil microbial ecology (Professor TonyO'Donnell & Dr. Ian Singleton); and plant-insect interactions (Dr. Gordon Port & Dr. Angharad Gatehouse). It is envisaged that trainees will use ozone, a pervasive air pollutant and powerful oxidant, to perturb the soil-plant atmosphere continuum. Emphasis will be placed on developing generic skills (e.g. languages, oral and written presentation, e-science) as well as specialist research skills, with each 'training package' tailored to meet the specific needs of individual applicants. In addition to the excellent research facilities that will be available to the Fellows, trainees will have the option of taking advanced taught courses relevant to their postgraduate research programme as well as a range of courses aimed at ful1hering the Fellows' professional development. Fellowships, up to 12 months duration, are available from January 2002 (until the end of 2005). Applicants should possess a good quality first degree in an appropriate biological subject and be registered for a higher research degree outside the UK. Financial support is available to cover travel, research costs and accommodation/subsistence. Newcastle is a historic and vibrant city, situated on the edge of some of the most dramatic scenery in England, and is a lively and rewarding place to live and study.
The Training Site prides itself on its recent research and teaching achievements. Further information can be accessed at: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/aes(opens in new window). Enquiries: Jeremy Barnes, Dept. Agricultural and Environmental Science, Newcastle University, NE1 7RU, UK (tel. +44 191 222 7374; email: J.D.Barnes@ncl.ac.uk). Applications will be evaluated quarterly (first deadline for receipt of applications 30/11/2001). Candidates must be nationals of a Member EU State (except UK) or Associated State. Fellows will be selected on the basis of merit. Newcastle University is an equal opportunity employer.
