New genetics / new society? integrating science, society and policy

Objective

Recruitment of Fellows to the Marie Curie Training Site on 'New Genetics / New Society? Integrating Science, Society and Policy'. The Science and Technology Studies Unit (SATSU) in the Department of Sociology (University of York, UK) invites applications from high caliber students researching the implications of the new genetics for society and policy and who wish to undertake rigorous training in one of Europe's premiere social science departments. Applicants must be registered for a doctoral degree at educational establishments in the European Union (except the UK). A period of study (ideally 12 months) with SATSU will enable successful candidates to benefit from close supervision by established scholars researching into the social and policy implications of new genetic applications. Fellows will be encouraged to engage with the research field through 3 related routes corresponding to innovative research in the Unit:
A. The Social Context of Human Genetics - relating to the implications of genetics for changing definitions of health, risk and social exclusion;
B.Risk and the Politics of Nonhuman Transgenics and Cloning - the Way in which animal transgenics and cloning relates to social policy;
C. The Social Shaping of Industrial Activity and Innovation in the New Genetics - the social management of larger scale industrial innovation in genetic technologies particularly within the pharmaceutical industry. Applicants are invited to apply to Dr Nik Brown (Deputy Director) submitting:
- a curriculum vitae including the names of two referees
- a 1500 word outline of their research (including title, key questions, research methods and likely contribution to existing literature)
