Genetically engineered microorganisms as whole-cell biocatalysts

Objective

The Training Site "Genetically Engineered Microorganisms as Whole-cell Biocatalysts" is located at Vienna University of Technology and consists of five research groups with expertise in applied biocatalysis, natural product synthesis, genetic engineering, fermentation technology, and analytical chemistry. It is the aim of GEMCAT to provide an opportunity to learn latest developments in the design and application of recombinant organisms in biotransformation. It is our objective to offer an approach to this area of research from various educational starting points. By bringing together experts from several key disciplines a unique insight into the many different aspects of biocatalyis and biocatalytic processes is provided to the fellows. The Training Site specifically addresses candidates from one of the key areas who are interested in expanding their knowledge and expertise into all other fields relevant to biocatalysis. The experimental projects offered to the fellows are strongly linked to ongoing research activities in the groups involved and will contain development of genetically engineered whole-cell systems, investigation of recombinant organisms as biocatalysts in preparative chemistry, and application of microbial biotransformation in the synthesis of biologically active compounds. Additionally courses on principles and application of biocatalysis, special methods in gene expression, aspects of fermentation technology, and structural elucidation are offered by experts of the site. Team oriented candidates for fellowships should have a solid background in one of the key disciplines (organic chemistry, microbiology, or fermentation technology) and look for experimental challenges in an interdisciplinary field of research.
