Objective
Positions are available this year at the Institute of Optics and Quantum Electronics (IOQ) in Jena/Germany for a doctoral research training. The IOQ belongs to the Friedrich-Schiller-University, it employs approximately 66physicists and technicians and is one of most important laser research centres in Europe. The graduate student studying for a doctorate will be trained in experimental Physics associated with ultra-intense laser-plasma interactions with matter. In addition the fellow will be trained in the design of ultra-intense compact solid-state laser amplifiers. The training will be supervised by Prof. Dr.R. Sauerbrey highly acknowledged in high power laser Physics who is assisted by experienced members of the Quantum-Electronics and X-Ray-Optics Group. The experiments will be carried out with the 15TW Titanium: Sapphire Laser system. A novel and compact Petawatt laser system is under development. Research will be undertaken in collaboration with several European University groups. The research will primary focus on the following topical areas:
i) Development of a compact and diode laser pumped Petawatt laser system using Yb : glass as laser active material,
ii) optimizing the performance of white light channeling in air by non-linear interaction with ultra-intense femtosecond light pulses. Study of the propagation, spectroscopic and application properties of the light pipes.
iii)diagnosis of laser generated high-brilliance X-ray sources and
iv) study of the yield and the dynamics of laser induced nuclear reactions. Doctoral training will happen in the stimulating atmosphere of a young, highly motivated and excellently supervised research team. Interested applicants with degree qualification in Physics who are currently studying for a doctorate in a similar area are encouraged to contact Prof. R Sauerbrey (sauerbrey@qe.physik.uni-jena.de) for an informal discussion about the training research opportunity. The selection of fellows will be entirely on merit.
