Objective
DLR is Germany's largest aerospace research establishment. Located at DLR's Institute of Structural Mechanics, the Department of Adaptive Structural Systems is the largest group of researchers to investigate smart lightweight structures in Germany. It is strongly committed to national and international collaboration with partners from industry and academia. Due to the system approach to smart structures, the department's activities span the entire range of modelling, design, manufacturing, control and experimental investigation of smart structures for shape control, vibration and noise reduction, and health monitoring applications. These activities are focused on the realization of carbon fibre structures with integrated actuators and sensors. The department's facilities include all equipment required for the experimental investigation of smart structures, i.e. accelerometers, powers amplifiers, data acquisition systems, controller development hardware, optical systems for static and dynamic deformation measurement, and FFT analyzers. Data processing is facilitated by a PC network, that is also used for finite element and multi-body simulations, and controller development. The manufacturing of smart composite structures is enabled by the institute's facilities, i.e. autoclave, filament winding machine, and resin injection facility. Available processes range from prepreg technology to differential pressure resin transfer molding. The training opportunities include analytical and numerical analysis, manufacturing technology, experimental investigation and development of control algorithms. According to the fellow's priorities, the training schedule will be individually adjusted. By collaborating with highly experienced scientists in interdisciplinary teams assigned to various tasks in national and international projects fellows will benefit from the training. Apart from a solid scientific background, high motivation and team orientation is required.
