Training on experimental micro-mechanics of materials

Objective

A fundamental knowledge of the influence of the local response of solids at microstructural length scales on the macroscopic mechanical behavior is a key factor in the development of new materials with optimum mechanical performance. The research at the Training Site is directed towards the study of the micro-mechanics of advanced two-phase materials, laminar and functionally graded composites and coatings when subjected to different loading conditions. Evaluation of the mechanical response at microstructural scales is obtained through advanced instrumented indentation techniques. The training that is provided allows the research fellow to become acquainted with innovative experimental and computational tools available at the hosting research group, such as a variety of mechanical testing systems and workstations for mite element modeling. Specific research conducted at the Training Site involves:- Deformation micro-mechanisms under cyclic and monotonic loading. Experiments are conducted under different loading sequences using such innovative techniques as advanced in site electronic microscopy to elucidate the micro-mechanisms accounting for plastic flow and fracture in metals, ceramics, and composites that contain a mixture of soft and hard phases. - Development of novel instrumented micro- and nano-indentarion methodologies. These techniques are used to measure local load-depth of penetration curves of an indenter into a polished specimen that hold the potential for quantitatively evaluating the mechanical response of materials from microstructural to continuum scales. Work comprises experimental and computational aspects of contact mechanics. Applicants should hold a degree on Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or Physics. Previous research experience should preferably focus on aspects of experimental and/ or computational mechanics of materials. Applicants with experimental skills willing to conduct finite element modeling as well as researchers with a background on computational mechanics are encouraged to apply.
