Laboratoire des ecouelements géophysiques et industriels (LEGI/CORIOLIS)

Objective

Description:

The 14 m diameter " Coriolis " platform is capable of rotating with periods between 18 and 1000 secs. It is equipped with a 13 m diameter, 1.2 m deep circular test facility. The axis of rotation is accurate to within ± 3.10-6 rad with the vertical, and the accuracy of the rotation rate is dw/w= 10-4, allowing for high precision experiments. Mixing tanks are available for producing large quantities of brine solutions, which in turn can be used to provide two layer or continuously stratified test fluid to simulate the background stratification of natural systems. This world unique facility is equipped with a variety of state-of-the-art flow measurements and diagnostic equipment including: ultrasonic velocimeters, correlation imaging velocimetry (CIV), density profilers and interface followers, conductivity probes for measuring density profiles and associated research accessories. For the three-year period, we offer 174 operating days of the platform, with full technical support, and about 25 individual users will benefit from it.

Application:

The proposal should be sent to the Project Manager and include:
i) the goal of the experiments with a brief " state of the art " of the topic;
ii) a description of the experiments planned and instrumentation required, indicating the parameter ranges to be covered;
iii) an explanation why the large platform is needed for these particular experiments;
iv) the preferred period for the use of the platform and duration of the experiments and;
v) the number of people involved for the actual experiments. The call for proposal appears in Oceanol. Acta and EGS Newsletter.

The main criteria are:
i) the scientific interest and novelty of the proposed research;
ii) the need to use the facility to achieve that research;
iii) the feasibility of the project and possibility to get data in the amount of time requested and/or available and;
iv) the formation of the proponent to physical modelling.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
